Railways News 12-2017

Greeting by Raimund Stüer

Dear readers,

What a year! In a few days, 2017 will be behind us – the perfect time for us, and presumably also for you, to take a moment and look back over the year.

Raimund Stüer, Vorstand DB Cargo

2017 was an eventful year for DB Cargo, and one in which we succeeded in stabilising our market position. Today, we operate services for our customers in 16 European countries, offering a large portfolio of products – from bulk goods to sophisticated logistics solutions. We stand for stable and sustainable transport solutions with a strong rail foundation – and a unique European network. We transport more than 80,000 wagons with more than 3,000 locomotives.

However, 2017 also revealed how quickly external factors can disrupt even robust transport systems. Events such as the line closure in Rastatt and unusually destructive storms have affected day-to-day operations lately. For us as for you, that has meant having to change plans and adjusting to exceptional circumstances.

No matter how well-prepared you are, some events are simply unpredictable and the best plans in the world cannot cover all eventualities. But there is one thing we can do. We must develop the most flexible solutions possible so that we can respond when disruptions arise – quickly, professionally and together.

Our tasks for the coming year are clear. We will continue to expand intermodal transport solutions in order to combine the advantages of rail with the strengths of other transport modes. We are drawing on all the business areas of our company in order to develop new methods of operation in combined transport.

Secondly, we are adjusting our system to meet the increasing demands of european transport logistics issues. That involves strengthening the European transport corridors, introducing more interoperable locomotives and becoming more efficient. To achieve all this, we are developing our track & trace systems as well as an integrated and universal logistics and information system across Europe for our customers.

Digitisation plays a key role for us – which brings us to our third task for 2018. Using digital solutions, we intend to fit our locomotives and wagons with transport-support systems such as tracking & tracing and sensors for our locomotives and wagons so that we can provide you with more information for your logistics operations.

On behalf of the whole DB Cargo team, I would like to wish you and your families a peaceful and joyous Christmas and a happy New Year. We are already looking forward to a fruitful collaboration with you in 2018!

Yours sincerely,

Raimund Stüer
