Article: AI-supported diagnostics for freight wagon tarpaulins: an innovation for quality and efficiency

DB Cargo uses an innovative combination of artificial intelligence and video gates to detect damage to freight wagon roof tarpaulins at an early stage.

Freight wagons are an essential part of European rail freight transport. To protect the goods being transported, DB Cargo also attaches great importance to checking roof tarpaulins. These are exposed to stresses such as weathering and sparks and can be strained during loading.

Automated evaluation by AI

DB Cargo is working on innovation projects in the DB CargoLab to implement the target vision 'Intelligent rail freight transport system 2030+' vision. The focus here is on digitalization and automation measures along the value chain in rail freight transport. In this case, AI was used to simplify the diagnosis of freight wagons.

DB Cargo uses video gates to provide a 'view from above' of the freight wagons: Images are taken from different perspectives as the wagons pass through. These are analyzed by AI models and any damage detected is assessed by experts. If necessary, repairs are arranged before the freight wagons are back on the tracks. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport via the German federal program to promote pioneering rail freight technology.
