Article: DB Cargo KONTImodal reliably delivers Christmas cheer to its destination – thousands of additional parcels by rail

Seasonal high-volume traffic supplemented regular operations: millions of parcels, hundreds of trains and precise operational control from Duisburg.

When the Christmas season rolls around, there is no respite for logistics. Full networks, tight time windows and parcel volumes at their limit – this is precisely when the efficiency of rail freight transport comes to the fore.

As in previous years, DB Cargo KONTImodal specifically supplemented DHL's regular services during this peak season. Seasonal high-volume rail services took on additional volume – exactly where it was most urgently needed. Together, we helped ensure that Christmas parcels arrived on time under the trees.

Rail logistics for DHL during the Christmas season.

On weekends, 223 trains ran during peak traffic, and during the week, 22 additional services were added on the Wuppertal–Munich route and back. In total, around 10,000 additional loading units were handled and around 12 million parcels were transported – a logistical feat that is only possible thanks to well-coordinated processes and experienced teams.

Everything was controlled from our Operation Centre Continental (OCC) in Duisburg, which coordinates all freight trains across Europe. The logistical challenge was enormous: high volumes, short time windows and perfect coordination between partners.

A big thank you goes to all our dedicated colleagues at DB Cargo, Deutsche Post and DHL, who ensured that the Christmas parcels arrived on time to their recipients.

The results show that with teamwork, precise planning and modern freight transport, even the demanding logistics of Christmas can be mastered smoothly – an impressive success that shows that things are rolling in Germany!
