Article: Together for green logistics: DB Cargo and Earth Day 2025

On Earth Day 2025, DB Cargo shows how climate-friendly supply chains can be designed - for a sustainable future.

April 22, 2025 is Earth Day - a global day of action that calls on us to take responsibility for our planet. Under the motto "You make a difference", this day inspires people all over the world to actively contribute to climate protection.

DB Cargo is fully committed to supporting this important event. As a leading provider in rail logistics, DB Cargo is a driving force when it comes to environmental protection in freight transport. Together with Deutsche Bahn, DB Cargo is pursuing the goal of being climate-neutral by 2040.

Rail is climate protection!

Rail transport saves over 80% CO₂e compared to road transport and is one of the most environmentally friendly means of transportation. DB Cargo shows how rail is becoming the basis for climate-friendly supply chains.

Here are the key initiatives that DB Cargo is driving forward:

  • 100% renewable power: On electrified routes in Germany, customers benefit from TÜV-certified CO₂e savings. We also offer 100% renewable power on international routes according to demand and availability.
  • Biofuel HVO: On non-electrified routes, HVO reduces CO₂e emissions by around 90%. Only HVO made from biological residues and waste materials without palm oil is used.
  • Compensation of CO2e emissions: Remaining emissions from e.g. pre- or post-carriage by truck are compensated by investments in certified climate protection projects.
  • Hybrid and bi-mode locomotives: Locomotives such as the Vectron Dual Mode run electrically under overhead lines and only use diesel on non-electrified sections. This saves around 17,000 tons of CO₂e every year.
  • Innovative technologies: DB Cargo saves an average of 13% energy with the LEADER driver assistance system. This has saved a total of 42 million kilowatt hours of traction power.
  • Sustainable properties: Since January 2025, all owner-occupied properties in Germany have been supplied with 100% renewable power from DB Energie.

Thanks to these measures, DB Cargo has been able to reduce its own CO₂e emissions by around 30% in the last five years.

Customers benefit from these innovations through sustainable solutions for their supply chains. With Climate+ products like the use of renewable power, HVO and support for climate protection projects, DB Cargo is driving measurable progress toward greener logistics.

Together for our future!

Let's make a statement on Earth Day 2025 and show that climate-friendly logistics is not only possible but also the way forward.
