Article: 25 years of DB Cargo Scandinavia: Connecting Europe

DB Cargo Scandinavia has been connecting Scandinavia with Europe and strengthening cross-border supply chains for 25 years.

A quarter of a century of cross-border rail freight transport

DB Cargo Scandinavia is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The company has been connecting Denmark and Sweden with Germany and the European rail freight network for a quarter of a century, contributing to efficient supply chains between Scandinavia and continental Europe.

The roots go back to 2001, when the freight transport division of the Danish State Railways became part of the European Railion network. This was the first time that Danish rail freight transport was integrated into an international network. An important milestone followed in 2007 with the founding of Railion Scandinavia together with Green Cargo in order to further expand cross-border transport in Scandinavia. After the partnership ended, the company was fully reintegrated into DB Cargo AG.

Today, DB Cargo Scandinavia forms the Scandinavian backbone of the European DB Cargo network. As an important part of the ScanMed corridor, the company connects the economic areas of Northern Europe with the markets in Germany and Europe. By establishing its own Swedish company in 2023, DB Cargo Scandinavia also strengthened its operational presence in both countries and further expanded its cross-border expertise.

DB Cargo Scandinavia relies on a fleet of 30 multi-system locomotives for its transport operations, including the world's only six-axle EG locomotives. They enable heavy goods trains to be transported across the Great Belt and the Öresund without having to change locomotives at national borders. With around 250 employees in Denmark and Sweden and intermodal terminals in Høje Taastrup and Malmö, DB Cargo Scandinavia organises daily connections between Scandinavia and continental Europe. An in-house maintenance workshop in Fredericia, Denmark, further strengthens the company's efficiency.

Even after 25 years, the goal remains unchanged: to further develop rail freight transport between Scandinavia and Europe and to offer customers reliable cross-border transport solutions.
