Article: Sustainable logistics concepts for Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz will continue to rely on environmentally friendly and flexible solutions from DB Cargo Logistics in the future. The long-standing cooperation is based on a dedicated network of high-frequency and, in some cases, cross-modal runs – a real benchmark in automotive logistics.
Long-standing partnership with a commitment to innovation
The partnership between Mercedes-Benz and DB Cargo Logistics, which has been ongoing for over 20 years, stands for intelligent logistics solutions that have been constantly evolving since the 1990s. Mercedes-Benz recognized early on how important resilience and sustainability are in logistics. Together with DB Cargo Logistics, the company therefore consistently focuses on innovative solutions that are tailored to the requirements of a modern car manufacturer – from security of supply to climate protection. Together, an innovative and reliable logistics network has been established that links the company's sites with each other, takes into account the tight cycle times in the plants and can react flexibly to fluctuations.
Environmentally friendly logistics solutions with Climate+
With Climate+, DB Cargo Logistics offers CO₂e-reduced rail transports that support the customer's high environmental goals. "For Mercedes-Benz, sustainability is important along the entire transport chain. We share this conviction and are working consistently to implement it," emphasizes Martin Fildebrandt, Head of Sales and Solution Design Premium Accounts at DB Cargo Logistics. And the Stuttgart-based company has big ambitions: by 2039, the entire new vehicle fleet is to be carbon neutral across all stages of the value chain and the entire life cycle, including service providers. In DB Cargo Logistics, the car manufacturer has a partner at its side that is not only on board, but is actively supporting its ambitions. For example, further optimizations in terms of CO2e savings are constantly being examined in the current contracts, such as the switch to HVO as fuel for road transport.
Customized inbound and outbound solutions
Inbound logistics for vehicle parts
Mercedes-Benz RailNet, a logistics network from DB Cargo Logistics tailored to the manufacturer's requirements, seamlessly connects suppliers and plants throughout Europe and ensures that vehicle parts arrive just-in-time and just-in-sequence - precisely coordinated with the production processes. Pure rail transports or, if required, intermodal door-to-door transports are designed, implemented and controlled. In addition, parallel truck runs are carried out in the event of volume peaks and capacity bottlenecks.
Outbound logistics for finished vehicles
DB Cargo Logistics relies on resilient block train concepts for the transportation of finished vehicles, thus supporting the rapid availability of new vehicles to customers worldwide. For vehicle transport, DB Cargo Logistics relies on state-of-the-art car carrier cars for Mercedes-Benz, which can be flexibly adapted for different models.
A special highlight for both inbound and outbound logistics can be found at the strategically important Kornwestheim hub: a flexible marshaling yard, a so-called hub, is used here especially for the automotive industry. This serves as an important buffer area and, thanks to its connection to the Mercedes-Benz plants, enables demand-driven supply in line with the tight production schedule. A specially installed control unit on site coordinates the bundling and distribution of quantities from all directions.
Efficient logistics by linking load runs
The networks are not only climate-friendly, but also efficient when capacities are utilized in both directions. For example, vehicles for export are transported from Sindelfingen to Bremerhaven, while the cargo space on the return journey can be used for imported cars.
Customer benefits: Resilience and climate protection
DB Cargo Logistics has tailored its range of services specifically to customer needs:
- Perfectly matched to the production cycle: adaptable and stable networks with a direct connection to plant logistics
- Maximum flexibility with varying transport requirements thanks to the intelligent combination of road and rail transportation

"Thanks to our long-standing, close partnership, we know the requirements and wishes of Mercedes-Benz very well and can use our strengths in a targeted manner. It is our mutual aim to continuously optimize well-established concepts and processes, be it through efficiency measures in transport concepts or even more far-reaching emission avoidance," emphasizes Kai Birnstein, Head of Sales and Solution Design Automotive.
