Article: DB Cargo supports Tata Steel on the road to green steel production

DB Cargo is modernizing 60 BAA freight cars for Tata Steel to support the switch to electric arc furnaces in steel production.

DB Cargo UK and DB Cargo Polska are working together to make Tata Steel's steel production more sustainable. In a significant step, the two companies are modernizing 60 BAA freight cars, which will be used to transport steel raw materials in the future. This measure is a central part of Tata Steel's transition to environmentally friendly electric arc furnace technology, which is intended to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions in steel production. DB Cargo reports on the successful collaboration and the valuable support that Tata Steel is receiving in this phase of the transformation.

New life for old wagons

DB Cargo Polska manufactures new 40-foot frames at its Rybnik plant, which are then transported to the UK. There, DB Cargo UK carries out the final assembly in its workshop in Stoke: the new running gears are installed, the loading areas are adapted and the wagons are designed to meet the special requirements of coil and slab transport. Thanks to this technical adaptation, the wagons can be used flexibly and, if necessary, converted later to transport raw materials for the new electric arc furnaces.

Green steel: DB Cargo as a strong partner

With an investment of 1.25 billion pounds, Tata Steel is pressing ahead with the conversion of its plant in Port Talbot and is relying on modern electric arc furnaces, which emit significantly less CO₂ than traditional blast furnaces. To support this new technology, an efficient transportation system is needed to ensure a reliable and environmentally friendly material flow. The modernized BAA freight cars are an important part of this logistics solution and play a key role in enabling Tata Steel to smoothly convert its production processes. DB Cargo UK that the logistics work seamlessly - from the production of the wagon frames in Poland through to final delivery and use in the UK.

The switch to electric arc furnaces not only marks a technical innovation, but also a decisive step towards more sustainable and lower carbon steel production. DB Cargo UK is supporting this development with flexible and innovative logistics solutions that adapt to the new requirements. The modern BAA freight cars, which initially transport steel raw materials, can later also be used to transport raw materials for the electric arc furnaces. This means that the entire logistics system is adapted to the new production processes and designed to meet the requirements of a green steel industry in the long term.
