Article: DB Cargo and Vossloh Rolling Stock: Hybrid locomotives for a sustainable future in shunting
Working together for sustainable shunting operations of the future
Kiel, October 2025. Vossloh Rolling Stock (VR) presented the new Modula platform shunting locomotives at its headquarters in Kiel-Suchsdorf together with representatives of its parent company CRRC ZELC and DB Cargo AG.
Technology for the future of rail transport
DB Cargo has signed a framework agreement with VR for up to 250 series locomotives. The first order is for 50 vehicles, which are to be made available for initial operational use from mid-2027.
DB Cargo is relying on a VR model that combines climate protection, high performance, and viability for the future: the Modula BDD (two diesel engines plus battery) with its robust construction is used for shunting and mainline operations, runs on zero emissions with battery power and has a clean Stage V engine for alternative fuels such as HVO diesel. It is part of an extensive programme to develop a new generation of modular mid-cab locomotive. The platform enables the use of various energy sources – battery, diesel and contact wire – in a flexible system. This principle thus forms the basis for the environmentally friendly and efficient shunting of the future.
Strategic cooperation on equal terms
The project combines the engineering and approval expertise of Vossloh Rolling Stock in Europe with the development expertise of CRRC ZELC in China. Together, the partners are creating a platform that will serve the European market sustainably and meet future requirements – for example, in the areas of zero emissions drives and digitalisation.
