Article: Sustainable logistics becomes a competitive factor: DB Cargo at the DVZ ZERO Event 2025
At the DVZ ZERO Event 2025 in Düsseldorf, Sebastian Schilling, Head of Corporate Development, Marketing, Compliance and Sustainability at DB Cargo, provided key impetus in the discussion on sustainable logistics. He made it clear that climate-friendly transport is becoming increasingly crucial for customers' competitiveness.
DB Cargo actively supports its customers in making their supply chains more sustainable and reducing transport emissions – as evidenced by relevant certifications. For customers, this means that one freight train replaces around 52 lorries and reduces transport emissions by 80% per tonne kilometre. This results in measurable ecological and economic benefits.
Schilling emphasised that climate protection is an integral part of DB Cargo's corporate strategy. The green transformation of the entire group – from electrification and renewable energies to the phase-out of fossil diesel fuel – is creating the basis for sustainable, viability for the future logistics.
CV Sebastian Schilling
Sebastian Schilling has been with Deutsche Bahn since 1998 and is now head of business development, marketing and regulation at DB Cargo AG, Europe's largest freight railway.
His focus is on reducing transport emissions and supporting customers in positioning themselves sustainably in the competitive market with climate-friendly transport solutions – including certified offers.
He has many years of experience in railway operations, product development and sales, and combines technical expertise with practical solutions for industrial and commercial customers.
In addition to its environmental benefits, rail also increases efficiency and resilience, especially in volatile markets. Digital solutions such as accurate emissions data and modern shipment tracking make sustainable decisions measurable and controllable for customers.
DB Cargo is leading the way with concrete measures: by 2026, it aims to halve its own emissions compared to 2019, and by 2040, the company plans to be completely climate-neutral. With Climate+, DB Cargo already offers transport services that are 100% powered by renewable power or alternative drive systems. This makes it clear that climate-friendly logistics is already a reality today.
In conclusion, Schilling emphasised the need for joint action: politicians, companies and infrastructure operators must make consistent use of the existing solutions. This is the only way to translate climate targets into real emissions reductions – with rail remaining the backbone of sustainable supply chain.
