Article: DB Cargo UK: New breakdown and recovery vehicles for the rail network

Modern vehicles for fast and efficient operations

DB Cargo UK has put a new fleet of emergency vehicles into operation to further improve its breakdown and recovery services. A total of ten new vans will be deployed across England, Scotland and Wales, replacing the previous generation of two-way vehicles which were decommissioned in 2023.

The new 7-tonne vehicles are equipped with powerful lifting and recovery technology and are specially designed to reach even remote sections of the British rail network with ease. Jon Harman, Head of Asset Management and Maintenance, emphasises: ‘This investment makes our teams more flexible and enables a much faster response in the event of an emergency.’

The previous Bruff vehicles had been in use since 1999, but the need to put them directly on the railway has greatly diminished. Thanks to more compact and easier to transport equipment, the new vans are much more mobile and fulfil the requirements of today's everyday operations perfectly.

Sean Coulby, Manager of the Breakdown and Recovery Service, explains: ‘This investment is an important step in further strengthening our operational capability - especially in the event of incidents on the network.’ Over the last two years, more than £2 million has been invested in new vehicles and equipment to significantly reduce emergency response times.’

The work of the deployment teams is physically and mentally challenging and often takes place under difficult conditions. DB Cargo UK has therefore made targeted investments in equipment and supplies to ensure that the teams have the best possible support even during longer operations - sometimes lasting several weeks.
