Article: Arctic Route: New Connection between China and Europe

From August to October, DB Cargo Full Load Solutions offers a seasonal sea connection from Ningbo through the Arctic Ocean to Europe.

Through the Arctic Ocean to Europe

Since August, a seasonal sea connection has expanded the existing multimodal transport options between China and Europe. DB Cargo Full Load Solutions uses the Arctic route from Ningbo through the Arctic Ocean to Felixstowe in the United Kingdom.

The main leg takes an average of around 21 days. This makes the connection approximately three times faster than the route around Africa. From Felixstowe, feeder services are available with transit times of around five days.

Depending on the transport volume, direct calls at Hamburg, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Gdansk are also possible, as are onward movements by truck to a wide range of European countries.

Seasonal Service from August to October

The connection is limited to the months from August to October and complements the existing sea routes. In addition to not being subject to sanctions, the short transit time is a major advantage. The first shipments included machinery parts for the automotive industry.

In principle, goods from all industries can be transported. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) and dangerous goods are also possible. The permissible draught is limited to 11 metres.

The suitability of the connection therefore depends, among other factors, on the transport volume, destination port, required transit time and the limited seasonal window. Connecting services by rail and road throughout Europe are also available within the DB Cargo FLS network. In addition to traditional rail and multimodal transport solutions, DB Cargo Full Load Solutions also offers combined sea freight products.
