Article: DB Cargo UK continues its commitment to railway safety in schools
DB Cargo UK is continuing its collaboration with the national safety initiative Rail Safe Friendly for the third year. As a Gold Level Partner, DB Cargo UK supports 150 schools in the United Kingdom each year with preventive safety education in the railway environment.
Rail Safe Friendly was launched after the fatal accident involving 11-year-old Harrison Ballantyne, who suffered an electric shock while climbing over a fence at a railway station. The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness among children and young people at an early age of the risks associated with railway facilities and to prevent dangerous behaviour.
Last year, the programme reached 86,810 young people with the support of DB Cargo UK. The content was conveyed in an age-appropriate manner through safety meetings, school presentations and video-based reconstructions of real-life dangerous situations. Topics covered included behaviour on railway tracks, at stations and in the vicinity of electrified lines.
To assess the impact of the initiative, a social value of £1,969,718.90 was reported for the reporting period. This figure does not represent a financial return, but quantifies the social benefits of the measures. It is based on established evaluation models and reflects the reach, intensity and preventive effect of the safety activities. The social value thus serves as a benchmark and guide for prevention programmes.

Rebecca Vaudrey, Director of Health, Security & Safety at DB Cargo UK, emphasises the relevance of the initiative:"The feedback from schools and teachers has been consistently positive. Particular emphasis was placed on the fact that the content taught also has an impact beyond the classroom."
With this long-term commitment, DB Cargo UK is supplementing operational safety measures in rail freight transport with preventive educational work in the social environment of the railway. The cooperation with Rail Safe Friendly will be continued and further developed in the current year.
This commitment is part of Deutsche Bahn's group-wide activities, which are also focused on prevention and safety in the railway environment in Germany.
