Carsten Ritz:

I have a diploma degree in Industrial Engineering with a major in production and logistics and have completed DB Cargo AG’s euroTRAIL trainee program as one of the very first graduates.

After my studies, I planned my professional career to start with a graduate program in an international logistics company. Despite not having any previous knowledge about the rail freight industry, the back then brand-new program euroTRAIL instantly caught my attention, because of its flexibility and the numerous possibilities to gain international and intercultural knowledge within different corporate divisions.

After an introductory Welcome Week with all new trainees, I started the program at the controlling team at the Mainz headquarter. There I got first detailed insights in the companies’ complex steering logic. Additionally, I took the chance to spend some days at a shunting yard, to learn the necessary processes of equipping and commissioning freight trains first hand. These experiences still help to understand the unique challenges faced by a rail freight company.

My next station was in Utrecht in the Netherlands where my task was to support the quality, security, health and environment department. The main area of my work consisted of analyzing the monitoring processes for dangerous goods and suggesting potential improvements. This assignment differed completely from the former one in Mainz and enabled me to gain a more in-depth insight into DB Cargo AG’s operative processes and thus to get a more comprehensive view of the company.

During the following station in Zurich, I learned more about another important part of our European Network – the pan-alpine rail freight.  I was instantly integrated into the small team of experts and actively involved in the mid-term planning for the upcoming years.

After 12 months of operative impressions, I got the chance to start at the corporate strategy department for rail freight in Berlin and enhance my strategic view on the future design of our European network.  Furthermore, I had the great opportunity to be at the interface to other corporate departments and business units at DB Group.

I finished the program in mid-2013 and took over the position of apersonal assistant to a member of the board. Since the responsibility of a number of European subsidiaries is bundled within this office, the knowledge I gained up to then and the inner company network is a perfect base for my everyday work. Former trainee colleagues already established a unique network across business units and are available as contact persons – especially for new trainees. This strong and common spirit has been with the whole trainee group from the very beginning.

On top of this, TC – the academics network of the DB group – is organizing group wide regional and international events, where you can come together with others from the different DB group entities.

The combination of numerous operative experiences and the intensive exchange within the European network provided me with a complex view of DB Cargo AG enabling me to intensify both my professional and personal development. After the successful career start, I am looking forward to my future being part of DB Cargo AG.
