(30.06.2017) Representatives from the Belgian government, the Chinese automobile logistics company Changjiu Logistics and its rail platform company, HAO Logistics, gathered with others today to welcome the first finished vehicles from the Volvo plant in China's northeastern province of Heilongjiang arriving by rail at the Belgian port of Zeebrugge..

Special mounting frames known as "rack systems" are used to transport the Volvo model S90 vehicles in containers on their 9,800 km journey along the northern route from China to Europe. The train's trip from China lasts roughly 18 to 20 days, passing through Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany and Belgium. By using the new connection, the Swedish automaker is supporting China's One Belt, One Road Initiative to strengthen rail links between China and Europe.

The route carries trains with up to 200 vehicles between China and Zeebrugge multiple times a week. The aim is to increase the frequency of trains to five per week by the end of the year. DB Cargo Logistics will assume responsibility for bringing them from the Chinese/Russian border to Zeebrugge. The company will work with Far East Landbridge (FELB) on the Russian section of the route. The national DB Cargo companies in Poland and Germany will take over the European route starting at the border between Poland and Belarus in Brest. The Belgian partner rail company Lineas will handle the trains in Belgium until they reach the terminal where they will be unloaded.

"We are looking forward to working with Changjiu and HAO to considerably expand rail links on land between China and Europe for the automobile industry. Since other sectors are also seeing the opportunities and advantages of the rail bridge between China and Europe more and more, we anticipate an upsurge in demand for this route," says Jens Nöldner, Managing Director of DB Cargo Logistics GmbH. Goods and products shipped by rail move twice as fast as ships for half the price of a plane, and they even help protect the environment.
